Basically, Israel is the last thing from which the Jews are asked to
make without. The secular society doesn't care about religion. But its
progressive fringes see Israel as the sign you, the Jew, didn't abandon
your "particularism" which of course is in their eyes a strong obstacle
in the way of the universalistic society they have in mind.
As a result, you (us) are always asked to excuse ourselves for
presumable Israel's crime and mistakes. Doing that, and doing it beyond
every possible doubt, you get your baptism and are accepted (sometimes
they will check you aren't coming back to the old particularism and you
won't be excused for any doubt you could have about the atrocity of that
small state, the last national state, who lives on racism... and so what).
This is much a thing of who craves to belong to progressive
intelligencia. Not every leftist is so stupid but many are and you won't
feel accepted among them if you don't behave like a little Chomsky, or
worst.
Hmm but Muslims _are_ allowed to maintain their "particularism".
They continually whine about their "feelings" and expect everyone
else to accept them. Interesting.

The home and family are the center of Judaism, *not* the synagogue.

Disclaimer: Nothing here necessarily reflects the opinion of Hebrew University

Here in Italy I don't see large crowds of Jews going in that direction.
But some of them (more often than not non-jews declaring themselves
jews, and I am not joking) do. I mean "Jews against occupation" is a
thing of a dozen of people, but it has a resonance not comparable to its
absolute lack of weight.
During the Last Lebanon war , while we sat here under DEATH
threatening Missiles , and earth shook around our house. Many of the
Dutch Jewery were blaming
their Israeli Family members for the Rise in Anti-semitism!!!! Never
mind that many of them usually claimed that there was No
AntiSemitism .... Now they suddenly blamed Us for it`s exitance.
Fortuntely I don't have this experience.
Accusing Jews to "cause" antisemitism is the most basic antisemitic
tenet. I would not refrain to put this fact in front to who says
something like that. Jewish or not he may be.
My feeling is that the very fact Israel is there and Jews around theI thought and hoped that it would be so , but to my surprize i see too
world are no more potential unprotected apolides, changed the whole mind
of diaspora jews as well.
many Jews who use Anti-Israeli as a sort of `ticket` into being
accepted by the Non Jewish society.
Yes but you should be careful evaluating weight of currents of opinion.
We did not have voices raising strongly against antisemitism, or against
political lunacies before Israel would give to us all the certainity to
be citizens even in our galut societies. I see that almost everywhere
there are robust and fighting organizations which have strong jewish
(and not jewish) support. Sometimes even running too far in defense of
Israel, always.
That is new thing.
I know Italy and a bit less Hungary. The Jewish pride in Hungary was
unthinkable before 1989. But is there. Antisemites also are there. But
people fights back. It couldn't be possible without the sense of
security Israele gives to who lives abroad, too.
Maybe I was too fast telling that old feelings are not there anymore.
But there are new ones, they weight and they are important.
The problem in European societies, methink is another: physical survival
to the assimilation.
Antisemitism, in mellow or harsh forms is alive and kicking. But peopleI am not so sure about that .
fights back without many problems.
Not everybody, maybe. But more than what was thinkable before, IMHO.
