I know what you mean. I was standing in my attorney's office one day
discussing some work and two choppers headed straight toward the
building. I said to her, do you think that's Marine One? She thought
a minute and said that Bush was in Camp David that weekend but he was
supposed to have a speech that day in DC.
Or like the time I was walking to class at the community college in
2003 and two jets screamed overhead really low. Heard later that they
forced down an unresponsive pilot We were still jumpy about things
like that at that point.
And then there was the time shortly after 09/11 that I heard what
sounded like a loud explosion somewhere near my house and the lights
went out. I immediately herded my kids (and subsequently the dog and
the four cats) into the basement. I didn't know what to do, but after
a few minutes, I got the idea to phone the electric company and
innocently ask them if they knew why the lights were out. They told me
a main circuit breaker on one of the electrical poles on my street had
flipped off (or something like that) and that was what had caused the
big boom and the lights to go out. I breathed a big sigh of relief,
but the experience was terrifying.
Well, some of us remember WW2 and the sound of German bombers overhead and
