It's an expression. When consuming large amounts of alcoholic
beverages in large gulps, you are saying lichayyim to your throat,
and, so to speak, warning it that a deluge is coming its way. Just an
expression. I don't know how commonly it is used nowadays, but Omama
used to say it all the time when Opapa would imbibe on festival days.
