As it stands now, whether two oppositely-sexed people engage in sexual
activity or not has absolutely no bearing on the rights and responsibilities
granted them by the state when they are considered married. Even those
laws pertaining to children do not presuppose a biological connection
to both parents except in certain specific circumstances, do they?
Assuming that this is the case, then there really isn't any reason
whatsoever why the state shoudl discriminate against same-sex couples
when registering such a life partnership.
So why insist on calling it "marriage"?
same thing, with the same rights and benefits, in the eyes of the secular
state. Saying "the state should get out of the marriage business" is
a bit stark as a public statement, but I would agree with it.
Ah, but it's the _calling_ it the same thing, that makes it so
problematic.
