Where do you suppose his "maverick" reputation comes from? Here's how
Randall Hoven of American Thinker explains it:
"So where did McCain differ from the ACU? The big areas were taxes,
campaign finance reform, the environment and, most recently,
immigration. There was also a smattering of support for trial
lawyers; federal intervention in health, education, safety or voting
issues; internationalism; and some social issues. He was more
consistently conservative on spending and defense issues."
Government (at all levels) interference in health and
education has brought about very poor results. I have
previously posted here on education; we will not have
any real improvement until we have affordable private
ACADEMIC schools. We will not have good health services
until we remove the tax advantages of the current
"insurance" procedures (they are not) which actually
arose as a way to get around wage ceilings in WWII,
and allow the individual to get the medical information
to make his own choices.
Academic schools will have to be largely staffed
by teachers who cannot meet the state standards for
certification, but who understand their subject.
On taxes, I largely agree with him, as well as on spending
and defense issues. I do not agree with him on everything,
but I claim with the leftist Democrats as a dangerous
religious activity, wanting to impose on others what THEY
consider is good for them.
My position has always been libertarian, which was the
original liberal position. This is also my position on
religion, which is certainly incompatible with a forced
halakhah. Study, learn, and decide, but this is not
"politically correct".
Regrettably, the above differences will probably make it a lot easier
for Dem-voting Jews to cross the line this year.
I don't understand your use of the word "regrettably." I would have
thought that, as a person who is more conservative politically, you would
have hoped that *more* Dem-voting Jews would cross the line and vote for
McCain.
And that's an interesting possibility. Historically, Jews have been
voting about 70-75% Democratic. In this election that number could
shift by as much as 10% (downwards), from the poll numbers I have seen.
