Pa'amayim for "twice" in general, as opposed to "a matched pair of times"
is modern usage. The dual is usually only used for pairs (shinayim
[teeth], raglayim [legs], yadayim [hands]). There is a similar suffix
sometimes used for uncountables: chayim (life), shamayim (heavens). Or
is the intent to imply that life and heavens also come in pairs?
(That was a real question, not a rhetorical one.)
Well, there _are_ 7 heavens. And we believe in an after life.
7 heavens aren't a pair. OTOH, sky/space vs the metaphysical kinds of
heaven would be. And with teeth, a pair of sets of teeth would qualify
as shinayim.
But it's the bit about afterlife that got me thinking. Really there are
three lives: this one (with or without gilgulim), the one in heaven,
and the one after the resurrection.
