You've obviously never owned a chicken, they aren't people nor are they
like cats or dogs. A chicken has the intelligence of an alarm clock,
they eat and they sleep, that's it. They show absolutely no
individuality, they don't play, they don't give any signs that they are
interested in anything other than eating. Battery raised chickens get
everything they want, which is a warm place to sleep an all the grain
they can eat.

They're probably indifferent to the fact that in some instances their
legs won't support their weight.

Whatever intelligence that their wild ancestors might have had has been
bred out of them over the last 5000 or 10000 years, after all chickens
are not pets, they are just food. Your dogs are different, they have
personalities. Human selection has favored cats and dogs that interact
well with us, we've been selecting for intelligence and charm for
thousands of years, in the case of dogs it's probably 10s of thousands
of years. And of course the reason we could do that is that their wild
ancestors were predators which requires a much higher degree of
intelligence than a prey animal like a chicken, as Larry Niven said, how
smart do you have to be to sneak up on a blade of grass? This
anthropomorphizing of farm animals is ridiculous. Just because a human
wouldn't want to be locked up in a chicken coop all day doesn't mean
that the chickens mind.

Being no more than walking vegetables, they're probably incapable of
feeling any pain either, which makes one wonder why people bother with
humane slaughter.   That's sarcasm, BTW.

The reason for not torturing animals has very little to do with the
animal and everything to do with the person who is doing the torturing.
It's a very small step between taking pleasure in the pain of animals and
taking pleasure in the pain of people. For the Romans it was the
difference between breakfast and lunch. In the Coliseum they tortured
animals to death before lunch, moved up the ladder to criminals at lunch
time and then moved on to slaves after lunch.

This begs the point about chickens. No one is deliberately torturing
chickens, they are just raising them efficiently.- Hide quoted text -

I think I agree with you there. That is one very strong reason for
habituating ourselves to be sensitive to the pain of animals.

However I would go further and say we should not mistreat animals
"lishmah".
