a diaspora thing.
It would mean Yiddish isn't a dying language even if the phenomenon
weren't in Israel.
But it is. I often post the following irony.
I am what they call a Zionist. I march with my kids' school at the
Salute to Israel Parade down 5th Ave in Manhattan. One year, I did the
route twice -- once with one school, than ran back to the beginning in
time to do the route with another school. I lobby for Israeli causes,
attend rallies, etc...
My first cousin is what they call an anti-Zionist. He moved from Silver
Spring Maryland, a bastion of MO Zionism, to a community where his
daughter studied in Yiddish, Herzl is disdained, and the State of Israel
considered one of the major roadblocks in the coming of the messiah.
Did I mention he lives in Ramot Polin, Jerusalem?
It's an ironic world where the anti-Zionist is the one who made aliyah,
as opposed to the alleged Zionist who lives in Northern New Jersey.
I cannot argue with your logic. And yet, I remain somewhat in doubt.
This so-called making aliyah is not always a manifestation of love for
Zion, as the Prophet Yitmaiyahu laments "vatavo-u vatetam-u eth artzi
venachalathi samtem lethoeivah - you have come and defiled My land,
and have converted My inheritance into an abomination. On the other
hand, remaining in the diaspora lands is not always a manifestation of
lack of love for Zion. Someone needs to be here to greet the Mashiach
when he arrives and accompany him to Eretz Yisrael. As the Prophet
Heshea foretells, "and the peoples of Yehudah will gather together
with the peoples of Israel and appoint a haed over them and go up from
the land". See Rashi's comments, that the "head" will be the King
Mashiach" and the going "up from the land" means they will go up from
the lands of the diaspora to their own land. Yes, I know, ashrei mi
shem'lachto basam, oiy lemi shem'lachto borsi. But some, out of
concern for their fellows who need leather for making shoes, will
choose to be a borsi. And some, out of love for Zion, may have the
mesiruth nefesh to choose to remain behind to guide the king to their
brethren in the holy land.
Giorgies
praying to be on the holy soil of the holy land very soon. Meanwhile,
still candidate for Finance Ministry, and will not refuse the post if
offered
