A friend of mine got a job with the Israeli police as a computer
systems analyst. This was years ago when the state-of-the-art console
had a ball typewriter. The Operating System would type out "Awaiting
reply" whenever the operator needed to type in a response. That took
too long so my friend shortened the mesaage to "Nu?"!
I like that, yet I wonder how many modern-day Israelis would
understand.
I'm sure most of them would. It's a common phrase.
I suppose I should have looked this up in a search engine before
posting here. Having done so subsequently, I found a reasonably clear
answer on jewfaq.org
I'm not surprised. But then we wouldn't have had this pleasent
conversation.
