i have complete respect for my religious brothers (i'm a jewish
atheist) but why did he need to don his tefilim in the commuter
train??!!! who was he trying to impress? god? i'm sure he/she/it
would
have advised the guy to put them on the privacy of his own home.

planes I can understant, but a commuter train??!! can't you just
wait
and do it later or wake up earlier?

I can think of lots of reasons why he did it.
For example, he overslept that morning and just had time to rush for
the train to get him to the office in time for an important meeting.
The train would have been the only chance for him to daven.
