I'm saying the ends justify the ends.

Sum of all deaths is lower.
Sum of all human misery is lower.

So how is it the less moral choice?

It's not being mean to people now because of a promise that they would
be happier later. It's being mean to people now because otherwise a
subset of them would be even meaner now.

To excise a cancer, it is necessary to remove some good
tissue as well. There is no way of coming to any kind
of agreement with fanatics; it would not surprise me if
any group of fanatics believing in an Armageddon would
use dirty nuclear bombs to end mankind on earth. It
would not accomplish their purpose, but alas we are in
no way prepared for that. Those who believe that they
will get great reward in the next world for doing you
harm must be removed from positions where they can act
on that basis.

If your enemy states that he is out to harm you, it is
folly to argue that this is just rhetoric for those who
follow him, and that he does not really mean it.
