There are days when I look at that quote not as an opportunity to
get the gossip but rather as a method of self-defense: if you talk
about people behind their back, then I'll make sure you're never
behind my back.

My wife likes to tell the following story that happened when she
went to camp. The first day, the counsler gathered all the bunk for
a "get-acquainted" session. At one point she asked one of the girls
to leave the room and bring her something. While she was gone, the
counsler explained that that girl was "special" and need TLC. She
then asked another girl to leave the room and bring her something.
While she was gone she explained about that girl's problem. My wife
had the thought; "If she asks _me_ to get something.... I'm NOT
going".
