What?
This was a really stupid thing to say.

I see that you disparage the talmudic dictum "halacha hi b'yadua
she'esav sonei l'yisrael". It's so "nice" to hear people ridiculing
traditional Jewish thought on soc.culture.JEWISH.moderated :-)

Translation, please? That's the second time in this thread I've seen
the phrase, but still don't know what it means.

It means "it's a known law that Esav is the enemy of Yisroel."

Not precisely. It is "yedua" or well known, or commonly held opinion
that Esau is the enemy of Israel. But then, Jacob did screw Esau out
of his birth right. Later on, Jacob nervously met up with Esau, and
sent gifts up ahead to try to placate him, and so they did kind of
make up. Esau then claimed he bore no lasting grudge. So, I think we
should not OVERemphasize this enmity, but neither should we ignore it.
When we do so, it is invariably at our own peril.
But to overemphasize is a form of reverse racism, and paranoid fear
that we will get seduced away from our own traditions by the charms
and esthetics of Japhet. We should be overly paranoid because in
fact, they don't realy want us anyway :) We are more afraid that we
will want them more they want us. So we reject those we know will
reject us, so as to keep some semblance of self esteem :)
