Not just evidence of a flood itself, as much of that can be explained
reasonably well, but the absence of any antedeluvian artifacts...

I would like to expand on this a bit. And the comment is really aimed
at Christian scientific creationists, not at Jewish exegesis, but I
hope this comment is allowed. There is no problem, theologically,
explaining how the Flood occurred. Bere*** makes it clear: God caused
it to Flood. Lack of a scientific reason for the Flood is not a
problem at all, at least not a theological one. The problem lies in
the lack of evidence for the *results* of the Flood. If there was a
world-wide flood 4,000 years ago then our world would look a lot
different*. And if HaShem had actually sent such a flood as a
punishment and a warning then it makes no sense to cover up all of the
evidence.

*No ice caps, for one thing. A very different distribution of animals
for another. And so on.
