I'm wondering why longer services mostly in Hebrew are in demand among thethat
conservative constituency? I can understand why they might like cantor,
but, all other things being equal, why is a longer service in Hebrew
considered superior to a shorter service in the vernacular? I'm afraid
the only answer I can come up with is "tradition".
Then you're not thinking it through. By keeping the service in the language
of the Jewish people, it means we can walk into any shul around the world
and feel at home, even if we don't know the local language. And likewise
any Jew can come to my shul and feel connected.
Reform services are moving to more Hebrew. But that does not
mean that one cannot shorten the services, nor that one should
not also use the vernacular. I definitely prefer the Conservative
singing to the Reform.
Certainly much, if not most, of the service is traditional;
parts of it are from medieval authors.
