Perhaps the solution is to use references such as "your Judaism" and
"my Judaism" with the recognition that they don't mean quite the same
thing? Or, just to refer to "Conservative Judaism", "Reform Judaism",
Reform rabbis, etc., with the realization that each of us knows the
difference and won't inadvertently think that the O rabbi is going to
drive to shul on Shabbat or that the Reform Jew will expect a mechitza
in his synagogue. It really doesn't dilute the meaning of the word if
we recognize that it has more than one meaning or definition.
Even the rabbinic writings tell us that this was the
case in Temple times. They do mention that people
from one sect would not eat the food of another.
There were other divisions which the Orthodox will
not accept, but they were there as well. Two Jews,
three opinions, is but an understatement.
