I can agree with the second half. The Law surely developed. It _had_
to. There were always new situations to be discussed. But I do _not_
accept Don's first statement about the "original" Oral Law. That
definitely _did_ come _together_ with the Written. And it described
the basic _details_ of _all_ 613 mitzvot.

Yes. *Very* basic, AIUI.

See Maimonides Introduction to his Mishna Torah for further details.

Consider the difference between the Bavli and Yerushalmi gemaras -
which one is called "darkness?"

What's your point?

The Yerushalmi has a lot fewer arguments and explanations, apparently
because the arguments pro and con were fairly transparent to the
participants. Very little explicit explanation was necessary.

The Bavli is a lot more detailed - and it is called "darkness!"

My point is that the "explanations" that Rambam writes about in the
introduction were most likely "bare-bone" compared to, say, the Bavli
as written, simply by virtue of being at the source.

OK, but it contained _all_ the "details". Maybe think of it like the
Rif. All the _conclusions_ without the disputes. But don't forget,
the Mishna is written with many disputes. AAMOF there are only a
handfull of chapters of Mishan which have no disputes. But the
_volume_ of details discussed in the Mishna is enormous.
