Expect to see excellent wines coming out of the region. Would be nice to
have at least one kosher winery there.

Eliyahu, perhaps it merits an investigation.

Oy! SCJM had a vinter, Craig Winchell, who lived in the area but
who had to sell his superb winery GAN EDEN Wines because of the

Craig did not live in Walla Walla, but in Sonoma County, which is one of the more
expensive areas in the country. It was a good choice for his family to move to North
Hollywood, which has an excellent Jewish community.

lack of a Jewish community there. It had occurred to me recently
that Craig should have set up a "church" owned corporation (obviating
the need for a license to sell "sacramental" wine across state lines),
opened up a Kollel with free room and cheap board for a dozen young
families who would have to sign up for a 3 year stint. The young couples
would have benefited by dirt cheap accomodations and very inexpensive
health care (church owned corporation). Craig would have had a Minyan
plus educators for his teenage children. The young couples would each have
saved at least $25,000 per year for 3 years. If there would have been
a shochet among the kollel men, they would have very inexpensive meat,
and the community could have grown its own fruits and vegetables being
almost self-sustaining.

All the community would have needed is a prefabricated Mikva and an Eruv.
And a fast ADSL connection with a video camera.

And having the Kollel there would have enabled a full time mashgiach
at the winery and this would have allowed Craig to sell his wine in
Israel.

It would have been a win-win situation.
