context...), How about just because He's still a lot more powerful than

If there was some evidence that you could truly placate him by, say,
throwing virgins into volcanos, then maybe. But given that there is
absolutely no evidence that it helps, why bother?

But he hasn't asked us to throw virgins into volcanoes. We're talking
about the things He has commanded us in the Torah; things we believe
we're supposed to do.

You local mayor is more powerful than you - will you do anything he asks
in order to curry favor with him? I expect not.

My local mayor can be voted out of office, forced to step down, or
replaced by a lot of different means. It isn't a valid comparison. If
I believed that he had the ability to control my life and my life in
the World To Come, and that obedience to him would make a difference in
the outcome, that's a different story.
