Tax evaders exist everywhere, particularly in a country like
Israel that has onerously high tax rates. Are you aware
that the Arabs also major tax evaders? They have a whole
underground economy. That is why the Arab towns
officially are always have the highest unemployment rates,
many work unofficially and collect unemployment benefits
at the same time. It was pointed out that when MERETZ
arranged large increases in handouts to single mothers,
many Arabs would nominally divorce their (up to 4) wives
and though still living together, get these higher benefits.
This was pointed out during the hearings in the Knesset
when Netanyahu succeeded in reducing these benefits.
A few years ago there was a case where Inspectors for the
Israeli Broadcasting Authority burst into someone's home
to confiscate a TV that he didn't pay the Bolshevik tax for.
A discussion on this was held on the "Erev Hadash" program
with Dan Margalit. Margalit asked an inspector if there are
a lot of people who don't pay the tax, the inspector said
"there is a major problem in the Arab sector" and you could
see Margalit off at the side of the screen motioning to the
guy to shut up. There is official silence regarding Arab
law breaking because the police and the political echelons
don't want to get involved. It is much more fun and politically
profitable to attack the Haredim.
