BTW, it would seem that the molad, the average time between new moons
as given by Rabban Gamliel was most accurate around 1600-1700 years
ago. (The month gains roughly .3 sec each century.)
Which is amazing, because it proves we had a number that we knew well
before the end of the Sanhedrin and the need to standardize a long-term
calendar. A number that was most accurate when that last Sanhedrin
needed it -- not when we first had it!
What was amazing about it? They got the most accurate
figure the Hellenistic astronomers could provide.
