Oh, well damn. I was pretty convinced Torah was the way to go, but with
this 101st posting of this same ol' quote, I must say my mind's been
changed. Thanks, now I can go out bowling tonight instead of staying
home eating by candlelight!
I said "necessarily". While I personally believe that
driving on Shabbath is permitted,
What you (anyone) "personally believe" about honoring the Shabbath has
absolutely no relationship with Judaism. In your case it is merely Rubinism.
I would not do what
I consider to transgress Shabbath.
What you consider to be a transgression of Shabbath has no place in the real
world of Torah Judaism. Again you are merely following the misconceived
dictates of a convenient "Rubinism". But you know that already!
In the absence of a reconsideration of what is appropriate
observance for Shabbath, based on the secular knowledge
which we are commanded to use, I must follow the Reform
approach and reconsider the problem.
It is clear that in Temple days the various sects had
widely different interpretations. After the Academy
had gained control, the usual efforts were made to
eliminate the heresies. We have only a small amount
of information on any of them, other than the fact that
they existed.
I could equally say that the Orthodox view is not Judaism,
but the Rabbinic interpretation of the Pharasaic position.
Judaism has no more need of a "catholic" uniformity than
Christianity does, or any other religion. The Reform
movement was a protest against Orthodoxy, and Conservatism
was a protest against both. Let us get down to basics, not
detailed halakhah.
