Re: Chasidic Reggae Star Mattisyahu, a Moshichist?

"WE WANT MOSHIACH NOW.. WE DON'T WANT TO WAIT" was quite a common song
in my british jewish primary school - sung about 20 years ago. They
never mentioned lubavitch. In retrospect, it is probably a lubavitch
song.

According to Chabad.org, the following is video of the first time it
was ever sung in the Rebbe's presence (in 1980):

While I don't know for sure, I was under the impression that it was
indeed a Lubavitch song, and that it originated at whatever children's
school the Rebbe was at in the video above.

You can't just be so jumpy, suspecting people of being moshichists.
But does it really matter?

Reminds me of this muslim that was obsessed over who was jewish.

I actually have known *MANY* Muslims who were like that. In my defense,
I would object that the difference is that those Muslims had a
malicious intent behind their curiosity, as they were looking for
something analogous to the bogeyman (i.e. something they mythologize as
evil, et cetera), while I on the other hand mean no ill will towards
Mattisyahu (assuming he is a Moshichist) or any other Moshichist. I was
merely curious. Nonetheless, I would agree that my curiousity can lead
to others who have less-than-salubrious intentions towards Moshichists
to take note of new information.

Also, I agree that singing this song does not make one a Moshichist. I
imagine even for a Lubavitcher who in his heart sincerely believes the
Rebbe is dead and was NOT Moshiach, the song "We Want Moshiach Now"
still rings true, because he wants still Moshiach (whomever he may be)
to come soon. Also, on the few occasions I have seen a Lubavitcher
Shliach wrap a person in tefillin, he made the person say, at the end,
"I want Moshiach NOW" (emphasis theirs). I assume from this that all
Lubavitcher Shluchim continue to have the people say that, and
Fishkoff's book claims the majority of Lubavitcher Shluchim are not
Moshichists, therefore it would seem clear there are non-Moshichist
Lubavitchers who still see the importance in building desire to bring
Moshiach (so as to hasten his coming, et cetera).

(As long as the moshichist doesn't make moshichist statements while
leading the service!)

Again, I did not mean to cast any negative sentiment on the belief.
Since I'm outside the fold of this debate, I try not to cast judgement
on the Moshichistim. I'm merely fascinated by the phenomenon of this
new instance of Moshichism (as well as the Elokist subset within it,
however tiny).
