Here's the standard shpiel I send out to the lists in which I
participate, as needed:

Our postings can be made a lot more readable if people would follow
a few simple guidelines.

(1) Please set things up so that you send mail as plain text, rather
than HTML or rich text. Not all platforms handle HTML or rich
text in a graceful manner. In the best-case scenario, such
platforms will essentially have two versions of each message (one
in plain text, and one in encoded HTML or rich text). In the
worst-case scenario, they will only provide the encoded HTML or
rich text, which means that the the message will be nearly (if not
completely) unreadable without further processing.

(2) Please avoid top-posting ("TOFU", "Text Over, Full-quote Under").
That is, make sure that your reply follows whatever you're
replying to. Top-posted messages make it look as if you're
playing the TV game "Jeopardy":

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read
text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on a mailing list?

(3) If you're quoting a previous posting, please trim same to the
minimal amount needed. There's not much joy in scrolling through
a 100-line posting, only to see a 3-line response.
