Good old Micha raised a question (the puerility of American
entertainment)
that actually is pertinent to a family argument at the moment. I have
restricted my daughter from watching "American Idol" on television with
an
eye to banning it altogether. My argument was that the program is
premised
on the notion it is funny to embarrass someone in public (even if they
have
volunteered to be treated that way), which I believe to be a violation of
Jewish law. She asked me to prove it. (Living with her is like being
trapped in a house with a lawyer).

LOL. Joel, I think I ma seeing the prophecy in Malachi 3:24. :-)

Sounds just like SCJM... you should be well practiced by now.

I think I'm right. Where does it say so?

IIRC the Rabbis likened embarrassment to death, so the rule 'not to
embarrass' is extrapolated from "thou shall not kill." Someone who
knows their gemara will give you the exact quotes, I expect.

Shulchan Aruch - Choshen Mishpat 420:39 "Whoever ebarrassses someone
in public has no share in the world to come."

Thank you. Good. Anything about people who deliberately watch?

I think that people who deliberately watch, is a new low in the
puerility of American "entertainment", so it wasn't addressed in
the Codes.

I couldn't agree more. It's on Rupert Murdoch's Fox and everything he
touches turns to instant slime.
