Is it possible that you are looking at a reversal, left-right
inversion, or back-to-front view of the image as originally drawn? If
it is a lithograph-style image, separating the paper from the inked
source (as one would open a book) causes the image to be left-right
reversed.
By the way, when you stand up and look at yourself in a mirror, the
left side of your body seems to be the right side of the image in the
mirror. But your head and feet do not seem to be "reversed". Your
mind's eye refuses to accept top-bottom reversal. Repeat the experiment
while lying down in bed. :-)
