Nah. It's actually quite common here, and I've never heard anyone else
consider it rude. There's still plenty of material for you to comment
on.

Nope. It's white because it reflects all of the wavelengths that our
eyes are capable of perceiving. If a person loses the ability to
perceive certain wavelengths, snow won't look white to that person
anymore.
The sun emits a far broader span of wavelengths than the human eye is
capable of perceiving. When you snuck the word "visible" into your
comment, you were recognizing this to a certain extent, but your
mistake was in not seeing that "visible" is what defines white. If the
sun were to stop emitting light that's not visible to us, its color
wouldn't change.
