Can anyone tell me if it would be a bad idea to use a sunburst in
the
Kana Match game?

Perhaps the folks in <URL:news:soc.culture.japan>?

This newsgroup <URL:news:sci.lang.japan> is for people interested in
the linguistic study of the Japanese language. Of course, as a result
we also have discussions about Japan and its culture; but many people
who are interested in Japan but not linguistics will thus avoid this
group.

I sencond Ben, so I don't disucuss it here.
But short answer is it is a bad idea.

Ok, now that we're here...

So the short answer is that it's a bad idea? Can anyone second that or
give me a reason why? It's a design we see used quite widely nowadays,
unlike using something like a swastika or iron cross etc.

If it's really a problem, I'll figure something else out.

Muchan can correct my errors, but IIRC the sunray flag began as the
Satsuma clan flag in Kyushu--the Satsuma were very involved in seagoing
affairs. After the Meiji Restoration they pretty much became the cadre
for the national navy, and IIUC their flag became the Imperial Japanese
Navy's official battle flag. There seem to be some in Japan who are
nostalgic for those days, but there are many many more who are not.

Just to add a bit more, the rising sun flag which used to be the Imperial
Japanese Naval Ensign
until the end of WWII was re-adopted again as the naval ensign by the JMSDF
in 1969.
Therefore Japanese warships today fly the rising sun flag at the stern.
