Japan, the United States and Australia will hold a joint naval exercise Oct.
17 in the East China Sea, the Japanese Defense Ministry said Oct. 9. The
drill will involve two destroyers and two P-3C anti-submarine patrol planes
from Japan, one P-3C patrol plane from the U.S. Navy and one from the
Australian air force. The exercise is intended to improve defense
techniques, such as communication, and to serve as a goodwill exchange, the
