I'm not Japanese, but I have been to a Buddhist funeral of a
Japanese-American friend. There were Japanese mourners giving the family
money in special envelopes with thin black ribbons. Afterwards I found out
practice was called "Koden" and was the traditional Japanese condolence
gift.
