65 people dead so far.

People are dead, many seriously injured and others trappped. There has
also been strong aftershocks.
Hotels and office building collapsed as well as buses squashed.


Roads are badlt cracked, some areas are suffering liquifaction
and buildings are on fire.
Tents are being set up in parks , but there is ahortage of food and
water. The whole city is devastated.


The armed forces and civil servics from around the country are mobilised . There is a shortage of food and water .
This one is far worse than the first earthquake 5 months ago and it felt much worse. It also happened when people were at work , 80% of the central city is affected, Lytelton (the port) is 80% very badly damaged and unliveable.



There are expected to be many more deaths Heinrich. All hospitals throughout the country are on standby.
The airport is closed.

I have several very good friends in Christchurch and I am worried . I lnow the city extremely well and the central city is almost unrecognisable.


this is verby situation but the only thing you could do is to wait for the rescue teams to come in.
this happened all of a sudden with no alarming signs in advance?



Remember there was a major earthquake there 5 months ago and there and aftershocks were still occuring, thousands of them.
This one isn't an aftershock it's another quake in a different place and it was very shallow, although the faultline was probably stressed by the first quake.
It's starting to get dark in Christchurch and 200 people are missing.

Glacier watchers on the Tasman Lake had an experience of a lifetime yesterday.

Two guides and 16 passengers were on two boats on the lake when the 6.3 magnitude Canterbury earthquake hit, triggering tsunamis and causing a massive ice calving off the glacier. ........
