I. am currently reading an introduction to the Middle East conflicts
called "Israeal vs Palestine" by Paul Middleton. Not challenging, but
it's never a bad idea to recap the basic facts and you always pick up
something new along the way.

Middleton notes that during WWII (when the mandate was still in
effect), , the Zionist movement - which had by then pretty much
converged on the idea of the Jewish homeland being in Palestine -
circulated many tales of British atrocities. The Zionists were of
course anxious to keep Palestine open to Jewish immmigration, which
the British were attempting to limit in the interest of their mandate
obligations . and local amity. According to Middleton (p. 34), "[The
Zionists] courted American public opinion with stories of Jewish
refugees being cruelly mistreated by British colonial armed forces;
tales of refugee ships being blasted out of the water by the Royal
Navy made good headlines. Not much of it was true, mind you, but it
did wonders for the Zionist cause."

I raise this because I think it raises the following point: if the
Zionists were capable of circulating false reports of outrages against
the British to support their cause during the war, does this not make
more reasonable the possibility that they were capable of doing so vis-
a-vis the Germans after the war? (We also know that some so-called eye-
witness reports of German war crimes (eg. the vaportization chambers)
were, at root, fabrications.)

Only a fool would dispute the gravity of German war crimes but I am
still open to the theory that in fact the German high command intended
the deportation of European Jewry (and others), and while this is not
a nice business (though in warfare, hardly an unusual one) the grave
war crimes (including some limited mass muder of civlians with poison
gas) were conceived at a lower level and in their extent (as distinct
from their purpose), were not significantly greater extent than the
Allied war crimes, by which I mean the terror-bombings and the
treatment of German prisoners of war by the American occupation
forces; and also consider the crimes of our ally Soviets to
consolidate their revolution (particularly agricultural
collectivization, which reported claimed some millions of lives of
persons who were an impediment or a threat to the revolution and the
five-year plans (from the proceedds of which the Soviets determined to
secure the urban proseropity and military establishment.)).

In sum, I do wonder if there has not been basically a fabrication of
the "uniquesness" of WW II German war crimes against the Jews (that
is, the 'Holocaust') in order to further the Zionist cause in
Palestine. Personally I regard that cause as indefinsible in any event
but the question how it has come to garner so much support in the west
(especially at Presidential election times) is surely relevant.
