what on earth are camels doing in australia ?

The usual answer is the same as
"Waiter - what is this fly doing in the soup?"
"The back stroke, Sir."

Actually they were imported in the early days with the afghans who "ran them"
and played a significant part of the opening of Australia. They were turned
loose about a hundred years ago ... and went feral. Nowadays, they are an export
item and have been sold around the world, both as meat and as breeding stock -
including to places like Saudi.
