I don't care what anyone else remembers about the Troubles. I will remember
the 750-odd British soldiers killed in Northern Ireland. They have never had
millions spent on investigating their murders. Instead, their friends and
families, with quiet dignity, just got on with their lives. I can never show
enough respect for that.

I have absolutely no time for contemporary republicanism. By the
standards of the Geneva accords, international law, at its most
accepted and basic, the IRA were a murderously criminal agency or
organization. I have spent the last eight years working electorally
for the political party that founded the state of Northern
Ireland. The parachute regiment had a reputation for wanton murder
before they were sent to Derry. That is the simple truth of it.
