I would have expected that someone from Ireland would have some idea of the
implications of an "official" church, and a banned, unofficial church.

The big mistake is the assumption that ideas, and free thinking, are
dangerous. They can't allow catholics to proselytise because they might do
what? Think the wrong thoughts? What makes societies work is the ability of
citizens to come up with their own ideas. That's why free, Western societies
are not only richer than those where thought is restricted, they work better
on all levels - because people's thoughts are contributing to solving
problems.
