Hard luck Paul! I remember one total eclipse - my only one - from when I
was a child in Germany in the fifties. We all stared at it through bits of
glass darkened with candle soot (nobody ended up blind, no matter what
they try and tell you these days). During totality the dogs started to
howl. It was all very impressive to a youngster.

As a child not only did I look at the sun directly, but I used to look at it with a telescope, looking at sunspots. Maybe myopia saved me from being blinded, but it's scarey to think back on it.
