Seriously though, i'm not the world's greatest expert on newsreader
software etc.
Up til lately I have made a point of not bothering with filters and
the like, but it is getting worse than ever.
If anyone would be willing to share info on any newsreading system
with handy filters that still gives you good security & freedom from
spam etc I think i'm going to hav to start using one long last.
There seems to be about ten billion options out there, just wondering
what system people like...

No matter what you have to do some work with it all the time - my own rule
of thumb is to manually mark posters for deletion if they are either Laudan
or anyone who replies to him, with certain exceptions. Every day you have
to add new people to this, but it's worth it. Add anyone who posts anything
that's obviously meant for elsewhere, all the antisemitic stuff, the
xenophobic stuff, the obvious loonies - and most importantly all those who
reply to it, otherwise the threads turn up again and again. For all its
detractors, Outlook Express was very good at this and very easy to apply,
while Windows Mail is a bit more awkward but still usable. It's actually
quite a shock to see the utter slop that's posted here when viewed in Google
groups, I mostly don't see it at all until more and more reply and cross
post to some original ***. Then there's the egos for whom one group isn't enough and who add 'appropriate' groups that just drags his loony mates back in again, these have to be also ruthlessly marked for deletion.
['appropriate' groups removed!]
