Soldiers will not be deployed to assist the policing of the Twelfth
demonstrations in Belfast for the first time in more than 30 years. The
entire security operation for Wednesday's parades, including several
controversial ones, will be handled by police for the first time since 1970.
The move is aimed at normalising the situation to reduce tensions.

About time...in fact its way past due...

We have always looked forward to a time when military support for the police is
unnecessary. I suspect that deep down you're quite embarrassed to realise that
far from being part of an imaginary and oppressive 'military occupation', the
reasons given for military deployment in Northern Ireland turned out to be true
after all.

Why don't you try and restrain yourself from "I told you so" childish
nonsense... The winds of change are blowing across the six-counties, and I for
one welcome the efforts to normalize the situation by having no troops on the
streets for the 12th... It wasn't even 10 years ago when the situation was very
very different...

I also noted with happiness the limitations placed on the OO marches when it
comes to contentious areas... Only one drum... No pipes, no chanting... No
music... Not even "followers" who must be bussed past the areas... That's a
fair compromise... It wasn't even 10 years ago when Catholics were beaten and
watercannoned off the streets to force these marches through....

Well not quite a simple as that was it , It wasn't even 10 years ago
when Catholics rioters had to be watercannoned off the streets to
allow those legal marches through. the catholics just wanted any
excuse to have a riot bananas in stead of oranges and they would have
still (led by the thugs) rioted. working class were working class
back then all had the same rights.

I see the BBC had an article asking if the OO marches could ever broaden their
appeal to the other sides of the community... I don't think that will happen
so long as the OO are still celebrating the 1690 battles... Unless they want to
have a joint march... 1690-1916-22 Two great wars... For justice and for
country... It would make for a bizzare march... One band comes by playing the
Sash or kick the pope and the next band is coming up the road playing The Fields
of Athenry or The town I loved so well or some such... A red/white/blue band
followed by a Green/White/Gold band...

That, my friend Ray, is not as dumb as some people have said, and
such things would indeed need to happen, BEFORE a united ireland,
think about it does anyone in the south want a mass riot on the
scale that has been in northern Ireland over the years?
so what are the solutions, 1, Ban all Protestant parades?, wow I
don't think so, 2, Ban all parades? wow I don't think so, Patrick
him 'self might object in April. 3, learn to live with our past and
turn it in to something everyone can join in and enjoy, just as you
suggest. Well, as wild and crazy as it may seem, it is the route we
truly need to go, that would surely prove that a UI would work for
all. but no matter until this issue is resolved there will be no UI

compromise is the answer... We should ask the Israelis for advice on how not to
infame a war by bombing the bejesus out of everything in sight...
