So, I found the origin of this odd lil phrase. Apparently, the hatters
used to use mercury to make felt for hats. The accumulation of mercury
over the years did its legendary thing, driving them nuts. One need not
be a member of that profession these days. Just eat a lot of seafood in
the general neighborhood of coal fired electrical plants owned by U.S.
corporations.
Why am I envisioning a TV commercial that starts....."Are YOU a
seafood-loving-hatter-who-lives-near-a-coal-fired-electrical-plant......victim
of mercury poisoning?"

To which I must reply, "No, I am tinhorn lawyer living within sight of
hydropower, but sadly, dependent as anyone on Big Coal. As the dams are
owned by the BPA, I am just as likely to get Wyoming coal fired
electricity. Why, just a few years back, my local utility near went
broke buying LNG power from Enron. Also, I am unreformed carnivore who
likes a good New York or small Porterhouse way better than fish. I am
not as mad as a hatter. Rather, I am mad as a march hare."
