Gives me chills, I can't imagine the horror of hearing or seeing people,
children or not screaming for help and being unable to do anything for
them, there was a case somewhere in the US, I can't remember where I
read it on another newsgroup, of a woman who couldn't swim watching her
friends 2 year old drown, she was initially convicted of manslaughter,
appealed and got off. Strange one I thought. It struck me that you'd
have to be some sort of a bollix not to make some attempt to help.

As most people nowadays are given the chance to learn to swim as
a child, there will probably be a good reason why an adult can't
swim. A psychological fear of water and drowning quite possibly.

Perhaps, but some people are sinkers. I and both of my children are. At
least, in fresh water. We need to use technique to avoid going to the
bottom and have little reserve buoyancy to support another.

That would count as a good reason as well.

My point being that people don't normally avoid rescuing a child
without good reason. The only surprise in this case, being that
the woman was charged, let alone convicted of manslaughter in
the first place.
