The number of notifiable offences cleared by the police decreased by 5% from
35,093 in 2003/04 to 33,344 in 2004/05. However, the proportion of recorded
crime cleared increased by one percentage point, from 27% in 2003/04 to 28%
in 2004/05. Between 2003/04 and 2004/05, the clearance rates increased in
six out of the nine crime classes: fraud and forgery (from 32% to 36%);
offences against the state (from 42% to 46%); burglary (from 12% to 15%);
robbery (from 14% to 17%); 'other notifiable offences' (from 71% to 73%) and
theft (from 16% to 17%). Decreases occurred in the clearance rates of the
remaining three classes: sexual offences (from 51% to 46%); violence against
the person (from 57% to 53%) and criminal damage (from 15% to 14%).
