Deeyah: Next Anti-Muslim Provocation?

Deepika Thathaal: Muslim Madonna

According to the Independent UK, the singer Deeyah, described as the ?Muslim Madonna?,
has ?outraged hardline Islamists? in Britain with her new song and video that
?promotes women?s rights?.
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article346376.ece

In fact, Deeyah (her real name: Deepika Thathaal), of Afghan/Indian heritage, is an
unlikely advocate for the rights of women since her video fits into the
bump-and-grind hip-hop format, replete with sexual innuendo and repeated shots of
Deeyah stripped down in a bikini and slathered up with body oil. The video features
Irshad Manji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irshad_Manji), the Toronto-based neocon
lesbian/feminist, ripping off a strip of tape that covers her mouth.

?Deeyah claims, the video ? deals with Muslim women?s rights and female empowerment,
as it also features Muslim women who have fought for freedom of expression?, reports
the neocon-friendly Persian Journal. ?The singer, who was born in Norway but moved to
the UK after her act alienated her from the Muslim community, has been forced to
cancel performances and hire a team of bodyguards after inciting anger from British
Muslims as well?. http://www.iranian.ws/iran_news/publish/article_13540.shtml

Deeyah does not bother to explain how gyrating provocatively in skimpy clothing
empowers women. ?A lot of us are working for women?s rights, particularly in the
Muslim world?, Hoda Fahmy, who works with a group that provides education to Muslim
women in Canada, told the National Post. ?I think we have more self-respect than to
dance around naked to make our point?.

The Jawa Report (http://www.blogger.com/profile/1246490), a pro-mass murder,
neocon-friendly blog that has it out for Islamic culture, has adopted Deeyah because
?she?s hot? and ?also openly criticizes Islamic countries for their treatment of
women. http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/159857.php

That?s how you fight Islamic fascism?by taking off your clothes!!! Who am I to argue
with that?? writes Dr. Rusty Shackleford, who once suggested nuking Mecca.
http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/105878.php

Apparently, Mr. Shackleford believes sexist, mindless, and misogynistic rap culture,
legendary for reducing women to depersonalized sex objects, is a form of feminism.

More likely, Shackleford simply wants to thumb his nose at Muslims and does not have
a problem exploiting women in the process.

Of course, Deeyah?s handlers may be simply engaging in a brazen PR scam, taking
advantage of her heritage and religion, although the Muslim Council of Britain
believes she is Hindu, not Muslim. "Her real name is Deepika Thathaal. That's
certainly not a Muslim name, it is identifiably Hindu. Our suspicion is that this is
all a big publicity stunt", a MCB spokesperson was quoted as by Contactmusic, as
saying. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1633808,0047.htm

However, it cannot be denied the fact Deeyah?s video has ?alienated her from the
Muslim community? and resulted in canceled performances and death threats serve the
Straussian neocon ?clash of civilizations? program quite nicely, as the staged
Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy did earlier.

Moreover, it sends a message to youth in America and Europe that Muslims not only
hate their culture, manufactured by transnational ?entertainment? corporations, but
also poses a direct and potentially violent threat to their ?freedom? to consume
ephemeral junk.
