Fast-food chain to scrap "anti-Muslim" logo
9/19/2005 10:00:00 AM GMT
Burger King decided to withdraw an ice cream product after receiving several
complaints from Muslims who said that a label design looks like the Arabic
script of "Allah".
British media said that the fast-food chain withdrew the "BK Cone" and
promised to change its label after Muslim customers complained.
The Sun said that Burger King fielded "dozens of complaints."
And The Scotsman newspaper said Burger King "is being forced to spend
thousands of pounds redesigning the lid."
The daily quoted Muslim Council of Britain spokesman as praising the company
for "sensitive and prompt action."
Other companies that have avoided Muslim sensitivities in similar situations
include sportswear giant Nike, Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and food and
homecare manufacturer Unilever.
In1997, Nike withdrew tens of thousands of basketball shoes after Muslims
said that the logo, the word "air" in flame-like letters, looked like
"Allah" in Arabic when viewed from a certain angle.
In the same year, Newsweek reported that Nike launched a program of
"sensitivity training on Islam" and gave a donation to an Islamic school.
