Is that what you mean by "objectivity"?
Now we are going somewhere!
Not my meaning but from merriam-webster
A ha, I closed the chapter too soon. I missed this part.
Yes I agree with some part the definition in that dictionary:
"expressing or dealing with facts
or conditions as perceived without
distortion by personal feelings,
prejudices, or interpretations "
But I do not agree that the process of interpretation -for example- is
ALWAYS regarded as "subjective".
You can take a look at the process of interpretation in science, for
example. The interpretation can actually be done objectively. The
validity of the interpretation is tested further to determine whether
the conclusion is correct or not.
You can always do that with interpretation. The basic response
to you was to answer your question on objectivity. I fully
understand that there will be interpretation on scripture. However
in the definition of faith , don't you agree there need to be a
clear clear cut definition? Look back at my first post. However
you have admitted that you have no issues with subjectiveness
in your beliefs (when referred to your own book).
On differrent note (again, taking an example from science), something
can be done objectively but could still lead to a wrong conclusion!
Does that argument fit in context? If it comes to the wrong
conclusion , anything could have gone wrong in the process.
However with an objective definition and objective approach ,
the chances of making an error is greatly reduced , what
say you?
So in the final analysis:
1. To arrive at the truth, objectivity is needed in many cases. But
not ALL cases.
2. Although in many cases being objective is the first requirement, it
does not necessarily follow that the conclusion is guaranteed to be
correct.
You can say objectively that your belief is written explicitly in your
scripture. But there is no guarantee that everything written in your
scripture is true. This is a matter of faith. If some scripture
contain a verse that says: "God manifest as a Pink Unicorn" can you
accept that? Yet, you define "objectivity" as a belief that conform to
what is being written explicitly in the scripture!.
3. In many instances of life, we can find some examples where
subjectivity can lead a person to a correct conclusion. In fact many
decisions in our life were based on feelings and intuitions.
dg
If the person has in their scripture 'God manifest as a Pink
Unicorn' and they have faith in it , hands off , its their belief.
However we need to be consistent , if we say something as
an article of faith , don't you think it should be implictly
stated in one's scripture? That is a very fair expectation
of objectivity in one's faith and can be confirmed in one's
scripture.
