Hi, Kenny,

It's great to hear from you in Thailand.

I teach "Self Awareness Meditation" (in Indonesian: "Meditasi Mengenal Diri"=
- MMD), in two programs:

(1) weekend program: starting Fris 7 p.m. - Suns 11 a.m.
(2) weeklong program: starting 24th Dec 7 p.m. - 1st Jan 6 a.m.

Program (1) is conducted at various places, usually at Buddhist monasteries:=
i.e.:
- at Tangerang (near Jakarta): Mar, Jul & Nov
- at Mendut Buddhist Monastery (near Borobudur temple, Central Java): Feb,=
Jun, Oct
- at a resort in West Java (Ciloto, Puncak): Jan, Mar, May. Jul, Sep, Nov
- at Brahmavihara-arama Buddhist monastery, Singaraja, Bali: 3 times per=
year, in varying months, with Program (2) in anticipation.

Program (2) is conducted at Mendut Buddhist Monastery during the last week=
of December.

The program consists of total meditation from 3 a.m. - 10 p.m., with 2 p.m.=
- 4 p.m. rest in the afternoon. Retreatants practise "meditation" by=
sitting quietly & walking slowly to & fro along a 10 meter stretch of=
space. All personal activities (bathing, going to the toilet, eating,=
drinking, brushing teeth, laundering etc) are also done mindfully.

"Meditation" means observing passively, choicelessly, whatever bodily and=
mental phenomena arises from moment to moment; in other words, it means=
being in the here and now fully, without any anticipation, any goal in the=
future, and any striving whatsoever. No talking, reading, writing,=
receiving phone calls, looking at clocks or watches, are allowed.=20

During Program (1), discussions are held at 7 p.m., 6 a m. and 11 a.m (six=
times)
During Program (2), discussions are held at 7 p.m. only.

The topics for the weekend discussions are:
1. Preliminary Instructions on MMD (Vipassana Meditation)
2. The Five "Mental Hindrances"
3. Thought
4. Time
5. The Me
6. What Next (the continuing of the retreat's experience into daily living)

These retreats attract Buddhists and K's students alike. Increasing number=
of Muslims & Catholics are attending them.=20

One constraint among K's students here is the widespread misunderstanding=
that K discourages all kinds of meditation as sitting quietly, so that many=
K's students are bogged down in mere intellectual understanding of K's=
teachings; they miss the actual experience of K's teachings (total=
stillness, immensity, benediction, intelligence & love, movement not of the=
mind, the 'other' etc.). To remedy this misunderstanding, I have compiled=
and translated excerpts from "Beginnings of Learning", "K's Notebook", and=
other K's books into a 150-page book with the title: "Duduk Diam dengan=
Batin yang Hening" ("Sitting Quietly with a Still Mind" -- a phrase taken=
from "The Beginnings of Learning") to be used by retreatants before or=
after the retreat.

One constraint among some Buddhists is the misunderstanding that MMD or K's=
teachings are different from the Buddha's teachings on vipassana=
meditation. To be sure, in practice, there is a big difference between=
traditional vipassana meditation as taught by modern Buddhist vipassana=
teachers and MMD, i.e., in the traditional vipassana one meditates with a=
goal in mind of achieving liberation (enlightenment, nirvana), and exerts=
maximal effort to concentrate on bodily & mental phenomena, among which is=
to perform every movement of the body & limbs as slowly as possible (the=
Mahasi method of vipassana meditation); you can contrast this with my short=
description of MMD above. -- But if one cares to look into Buddhist sacred=
texts, one will find a short discourse--the Bahiya-sutta, Udana 1.10--which=
is exactly identical with K's teachings on choiceless awareness without any=
goal or effort. (Please see below) This discourse is very differrent from=
the traditional discourses used as a reference for vipassana meditation,=
i.e. the (Maha)-satipatthana-sutta and Anapanasati-sutta; I use=
Bahiya-sutta to argue with certain Buddhists on the identity of K's=
teachings and vipassana meditation of the Buddha.

All the retreats are offered free of charge, but voluntary donation to the=
monastery is expected. (I myself am a retiree from the Ministry of Health=
with my own means of living.) Retreats at Mendut and Bali are usually=
attended by 30 - 40 people.

I also maintain and moderate two meditation maillists which are identical,=
i.e.:
- milis-spiritual@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
- meditasi-mengenal-diri@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
with a total of about 1500 subscribers.
Unfortunately, the bulk of the discussions is in Indonesian. But questions=
in English, which now and then are received, are responded to in English.

Krishnamurti Foundation of Indonesia (Yayasan Krishnamurti Indonesia) has=
its office in Jakarta. I am one of its advisors. Discussions are held=
monthly at 3 places in Jakarta, 1 place in Bandung, and weekly at one place=
in Denpasar (Bali). Not very many people (10 - 20 persons) attend these=
discussions. I myself very seldom attend them, since these discussions=
often degrade into debates.

I***

I think, that is all for the time being. If you need other information about=
MMD or Krishnamurti Foundation of Indonesia, please feel free to write me=
again.

With best regards,
Hudoyo

PS: I forward this message to my maillists.

From: Bahiya-sutta (Udana, 1.10)

"Then, Bahiya, you should train yourself thus: In the seen, there is only=
the seen. In the heard, only the heard. In the sensed, only the sensed. In=
the cognized, only the cognized. That is how your should train yourself.=
When for you there is only the seen in the seen, only the heard in the=
heard, only the sensed in the sensed, only the cognized in the cognized,=
then, Bahiya, there is no you in terms of that. When there is no you in=
terms of that, there is no you there. When there is no you there, you are=
neither here nor yonder nor between the two. This, just this, is the end=
suffering."=20
