The recent massacre by Jihadis in Mumbai is one of recent of 1000s,
yes that is correct thousands, of terrorist acts committed by
Islamists in India that has made this nation only marginally safer
than Iraq.  Yet, I for one am amused, disgusted and annoyed by the
apathy of the all those involved, the Indian politicians, the media
and the elite for their insensitivity and callous disregard and matter
of fact acceptance of massacres from places as far apart as Ahamdabad,
Gawhati, Sankat Mochan Temple in UP, New Delhi and countless other
places. The reason for this nonchalant attitude of the elite to these
massacres was for a simple reason, namely the victims of the earlier
carnage were almost all not well connected, rich or powerful. Now that
people in five star hotels have been massacred, the shrill pitch of
thechatteringclasses is deafening. It is ironic that security
personnel who came to rescue these negligent fat-cat Indians are the
very people who have been getting raw deal for generations. These
negligent Indians are pathetic creatures. They are now shouting about
the lack of political accountability, demand efficient government and
complain about the lack of infrastructure. Yet it is these very people
who have been quietly accepting and in some cases actively promoting
the dynastic cult. The depth to which this so-called democracy has
sunk to is evident from the fact they take great pride in appointing a
particularly undistinguished women of modest ability as a de facto
head of state. She is in an enviable position, exercising all the
power, with vast perks and privileges, without any responsibility.  It
is disgusting to see that she appoints all the incompetent nincompoops
to plum posts yet media has held her and her puppet s, including PM,
cabinet and CMs, responsible for the most disastrous security lapses.
The candle light vigils are now being followed by sanitised, stage-
managed and embarrassingly banal discussion for the fiasco. Not single
discussion programme has been devoted to this central and key issue,
namely the abysmally undemocratic nature of the Indian polity and by
extension democracy.  It is time that people awoke and kicked out
dynastic leaches, senile dysfunctional politicians and criminal
politicalclass.  Otherwise they will continue to suffer and provide
even more credence to a repeated phrase that the ruled elect the
rulers they deserve.

How correct. Your points are perfectly valid. So what do you
suggest? The military take over for at least ten years?

The time for that I suspect has passed as such attempt will be
violently resisted by a large section of the Indian society, who now
rightly or wrongly believe that democracy is the very soul of India
and glue that binds the nation.

What I have been saying all along - and no one cared of course - is
that we do need a brand new constitution. I would be personally very
happy to be involved in its drafting.

One wishes it was that easy. I think the real problem is the lack of
urgency, adeptness, and necessary rigor in the formulation as well as
implementation of framework required to meet contemporary demands in
ever evolving local and global events that is throwing up new
challenges as well as opportunities. There are countless examples
where critical aspects of state security have been seriously and
repeatedly compromised due to inordinate delays, mind-boggling corrupt
bureaucrats and politicians. The sad and well known fact is not only
are the culprits not punished rather they become ever more powerful
and even respected. A nexus between Tegli and Pawar and numerous other
‘politicians’, fodder scam, Tehelka, Bofor, Quatttrochi and so on, the
list is as depressing as it is long. A new constitution will not halt
such practises; they exist as much if not more in military
dictatorship. Instead, the solution is urgent need for formulation and
strict implementation of draconian laws, namely severe and even
capital punishment for all those offences that jeopardize the security
of the nation. The security will of course cover defence, economic as
well as social. For instance, it now transpires that money provided by
centre to state for updating security weapons have been embezzled, yet
there is complete lack of commensurate reaction from public, media or
state. There are countless such issue, ranging from diversions of
funds meant for food for starving aganwadis children, roads,
government hospital dispensaries, ammunition for policemen, which
chattering class has failed to pursue with required level of fervour.
One could argue with a degree of justification that Indians,
especially chattering class now running around like headless chickens,
are masters of their own misfortune. It is worth emphasising that
through the world efficient, respectable and properly functioning
nations regards such crimes, including withholding tax on par if not
worse than homicide. I recall from some item I had been reading that
US Vice President Spiro Agnew was impeached or had to resign because
of taxation fraud. Any action that makes state apparatus weak, as
above acts do, has to be regarded as serious assault on the state as
any direct attack by terrorists.

Military rule - military drafting people to unite against terrorist
attack - draft of a good constitution - bringing back law and order -
economic recovery with improvement of the environment at the same time
- better infrastructure - more confidence - more emphasis on health
and hygiene - stress on morality - curbing excess in show and
hysteria : in short more sense, sanity and morality in public life is
required.

Only the military takeover can make this possible. As you say, the
current political order is far worse than a joke now.
