English began to rule original research writing long back.

No doubt, but that does not mean that every Indian has to learn
English very well. Only those who need to do research, may need to.
This research argument is long worn. All I see is that in Korea,
Japan, etc. where they do far better and productive research than in
India, they do *not* teach English in school and universitites.
Japan has a longer history of absorbing and indigenizing
technologies. Remember they were a force even at the time of WW
II. However, what they have achieved is credit to them, since they have
done it in spite of a language barrier. Language may not be the only
factor, but it is a factor neverthless. Do you think it is better to
remove an advantage without first overcoming the deficiency that is
keeping India behind those countries in spite of an advantage?

What would make sense is to let people have a choice and decide if the
language is important to them and opt out if they don't think it is.

i do not believeing anybody is advocating removing "advantage" before
starting off on the corrective path. india has only one generation to fix
the situation. time is not our side. it therefore requires momentous effort.
fortunately many are acutely aware of the challenge.
