Buddhists converted to Islam and now exist as Muslims in the Indian
subcontinent.
You mean that fact has made hindus impotent for all times to come?
BTW was it something in Buddha(your buddhu) that split hindus or was
it something in hindus that any buddhu could split them?
Now by converting to Islam, the Buddhists have become even more
hostile to Hindus. Buddha did a great disservice to his country by
dividing the people and making them impotent.
Ravi Pillay talks about "red herrings" and as always, the discussion
drifts from the real topic of Ramarajya to shifting the blame on to
everybody. The one positive though is that "fanabba" has now begun to
articulate his/her position a little more clearly than the usual URL
to faithfreedom.org. For that I am truly grateful.
Before we go further down another fork in the discussion, the main
argument is that Buddhism was the main reason for decline and conquest
of India by Islamic armies - apparently Hinduism/Hindus had been
considerably weakened by Buddhists (people and philosophy). The main
difficultly with this argument is the presence of Jains in India.
Jainism is much older than Buddhism (the last Jain theerthankara
Mahavira was supposedly Buddha's contemporary), Jains and Hindus did
not/do not share the same scripture/theology (Jainism does more so
with Buddhism), yet Hinduism and Jainism co-existed (an co-exist
today) without too many problems, especially in the south. Why would
Buddhists and Hindus be at loggerheads?
After the Arab conquest of Sind in the 8th century, it took almost
another 4 centuries for invading muslim armies to really get into
India. The main reason was Rajput internal politics, and yes, an
entrenched and rigid caste (read jati, not varna) system, and more
importantly, a religion/theology rendered so esoteric and abstract
that a lay person no longer had any connection to it nor any means to
identify with it. That "common touch" was brought back by the "bhakti
movement" (Kabir, Mirabai, and a whole host of Maharashtrian saints),
and it is one that most identify with even today. That the temples did
not/do not get into the teaching scripture is another reason - most
temples are meant to perpetuate meaningless rituals and rake in
revenue. This has allowed a "godman" cottage industry to spring up.
Sheep flock to the godman shows (magical or otherwise) and leave much
lighter - not so much do to uplifted spirits, but likely due to
lighter wallets.
The RSS and VHP are trying their hand at organizing Hindus from the
current disorganized mess. Good or bad, it is hard to say. Good if
there is some order in the religious aspects (especially making core
ideas less esoteric and more comprehensible to the lay person
irrespective of "caste"), but terrible if there is interference in
politics, especially in a pluralistic society. It is the latter that
is emphasized a lot. There seems to be a perpetual need to work in
"relative terms" (they got subsidies, we should get subsidies, ...)
driven by a mindset of perpetual victimhood, and, by golly, dollops of
smug self-righteousness.
