WHO IS ABDUL BILAL?

Almost three months later, the name of Abdul Shaheed alias
Bilal is back in the headlines as speculation is rife that this
man from the old city of Hyderabad could be the brain behind
the deadliest ever terror attack in Hyderabad last Saturday.
Earlier, the police had taken his name in connection with the
Mecca Masjid bomb blast, killing five people. Apart from the
police, many security experts outside the official agencies
have also made similar claims.

But who exactly is this Shaheed alias Bilal remains a puzzling
question. According to a Hyderabad Police dossier, he is a
39-year-old man who worked as welder till he jumped bail after
his arrest for links with extremists. The police say that he is
in charge of Jaish-e-Mohammed's operations in south India.
His name was linked with a conspiracy to kill a senior State
BJP leader, the shootout at Indian Institute of Sciences which
killed a professor, the bombing of Pakistan-bound Samjhauta
Express and the suicide bomb attack at the Task Force
headquarters in Hyderabad.

His younger brother Abdul Zahed is also in jail in connection
with the Task Force office attack.

However, his father Abdul Wahed, a retired teacher, completely
disagrees with the police profile. "My son is merely 25 years old.
He was an intermediate (plus two) college drop-out when he
went absconding because of police harassment. I can't believe
that my son has become such a powerful person to be involved
in such cases".
