The mob wants to know just one thing : how much of reservations are
they getting. Others want to know at who's expense are they getting
reservations?

That's what caste & communal politics is all about and that is the
road communalists (i.e. you) wish to send the country down.

Just as soon as one group is handed reservations, along will come half
a dozen other groups threatning violence & riots to demand they too be
given reservations. In a poor country like India, there are a vast
multitude of people from all kinds of communities who want
reservations.

Who are you to deny them?

I'd like to see you get up in front of a crowd and tell them that
their reservations are being reduced or revoked. Before you get to
that verbal gymnastics of merging this with that, you will be lynched.

I couldn't agree more. This reservation politics has gone too far. Now
people are rioting to be called backward. It corrupts political
process and turns it upside down. It rewards politicians who expand
reservations. It punishes politicians who oppose or limit state-
sponsored entitlements favoring one community over another based
solely on caste or religion or gender or sexual preferences or
national origin or province or whatever that may fancy the vote-
hungry politicians. Once set in motion, such system is hard to
dismentle except by violence - when you try to take away somebody's
previlages or entitlements, they would feel being attacked and robbed
and they would certainly react violently. Besides which politician
would dare to do it and invite the wrath of angry mobs? Those who
originally enacted the reservations meant it to be phased out too -
far from it, it has forced its votary to seek constant justifications
for perpetuating it and make a case for expanding it rather than
phasing it out. It has made caste-politics to be a permanent fixation
of Indian politics.

This whole notion of 'representation' and 'fair share' is pernicious.
Representative government means government that is run by elected
representatives of people - where people elect persons who would
represent them in government on their behalf. People may elect any
representative they may want. It does not mean every group and every
caste must have proportional representation in government. It does not
mean if a particular group is not properly represented in elected
government, they must be given representation by appointment or some
quota. Thus, notion of representation has very limited application in
a democracy. If you expand it beyond that, it turns democracy upside
down. Groups or Communities can not be guaranteed any representation
in any institution, any sphere, any walk of life, be it public or
private. It is not for government or politicians to decide. If we
allow government and politicians to dictate such things, it becomes a
totalitarian regime, no matter how lofty may be its motives, far worse
than what it is trying to redress. Left thrives on such engineering.
Until India overthrows Indian left, it has no future.
